CYBR 679 Industrial Control Systems Security and Resilience

This course provides a comprehensive exploration of Industrial Control Systems (ICS) and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems, which serve as the backbone of critical infrastructure across manufacturing, energy, transportation, and utility sectors. Students will develop an in-depth understanding of ICS/SCADA architectures, their operational environments, and the evolving cybersecurity threats targeting these systems. The course examines the vulnerabilities inherent in industrial automation, the complexities of embedded systems, and the security frameworks designed to mitigate attacks. Through hands-on exercises, case studies, and industry-standard tools, students will gain practical experience in securing and assessing ICS environments.

Learning outcomes

General

  • Analyze key U.S. critical infrastructures controlled by ICS, identifying sector-specific vulnerabilities and evaluating their potential impact on national security and operations.
  • Assess the role of embedded systems in industrial infrastructures and control systems, evaluating their functions, interdependencies, and security challenges.
  • Investigate methods for capturing instrument telemetry and interpreting feedback control mechanisms to enhance situational awareness and threat detection in ICS environments.
  • Evaluate techniques for managing distributed industrial control nodes, identifying associated security vulnerabilities, and formulating risk mitigation strategies.
  • Demonstrate the ability to conduct an in-depth assessment of an ICS environment, identifying its attack surface and proposing defensive measures to enhance security.
  • Implement foundational configurations and security controls using industry-relevant ICS software tools, applying best practices to maintain system integrity and resilience.
